Late August 2000
I wrote this at the end of August 2000 to commemorate my wonderful memories of life at Seattle Pacific University. It’s based on the song "NYC" from the Broadway musical "Annie", and it reads like a script. This song/poem is dated, since Marston has been converted into professors’ offices, and they’ve built a new dorm called Emerson. Tiffany Hall, the building that once housed the teachers’ offices, is no more, torn down to make way for the new science building. All that happened after I wrote this, however.

Eaton [SPU’s president]
What is it about you
You’re small
You’re pretty
You’re you!
SPU
I go years without you
Then I
Can’t get
Enough
Enough of the Orangemen shouting "Falcons!"
In the language of SPU
Enough of choir members singing a song
Representing SPU
So busy
So happy
So hot
So cold
I’m sold
Again
On SPU
All
SPU
Mrs. Eaton [SPU’s first lady]
The shadows at sundown
The roofs
The view
The sky
All
SPU
Dr. & Mrs. Eaton
The students of our school
They love
Dear SPU
Student #1
What other school has that Demaray Hall
And a president Phil Eaton
No other school in the whole 48
Has quite the same clock tower
All
Oh SPU
Eaton
You make ‘em all postcards
Dr. & Mrs. Eaton
You teach
You preach
You’re still
In reach
Amen
For SPU
SPU
The shimmer of Martin Square
Eaton
The echo
Mrs. Eaton
The joy
Dr. & Mrs. Eaton
The school!
SPU
Students #1 & 2
The school’s expensive
Must I pay that much?
The price, the school, the dorm
Student #3
To think that I’ve saved up all of my life
And I still must take a loan
Eatons
Oh, SPU
The students keep coming
Eaton
By car
Mrs. Eaton
By plane
Eatons
You can’t
Explain
Their love
For SPU
New and Idealistic Freshman
SPU
Just got here this morning

Ten bags

SPU
I give you fair warning
In the Falcon
In the headlines
I’ll be
Go ask the Eatons or Murphy and Braden
The student they love best
Though California pays big for their art
Their fan mail comes addressed to SPU
Dale and Blaine [the clerks in the convenience store below the cafeteria]
SPU
Just look at the C-Store
Dale
The subs
The chips
Blaine
The lattés
The flavors
Dale and Blaine
The food
At SPU
Ian and Loida [who work in the cafeteria]
SPU
They come to Gwinn Commons
Loida
The food
The drinks
Ian
I answer
The comments
All
Amen
For SPU
