We Give Thanks

November 25, 2004

I wrote this on Thanksgiving Day 2004, to remember our forefathers who left all they knew behind to follow God to a new land that He was giving to them. They gave so much so we could be free. If only more Americans remembered our rich and Godly heritage!

Over the rolling sea they sailed
To flee an oppressive King
With their families and their faith
They set out across the sea.

At the rock of Plymouth
They let down anchor.
As they set foot on a new land,
They sang their song of praise:

"We give thanks to Thee, O God
For Thy protection o'er the sea
In Thy providence, Thou hast led us
To a new and beautiful land."

They braved the first winter
Though the bitter cold claimed some of their lives,
They trusted God to sustain them
And He brought them through the frosty chill

They sat down to table with their native friends
With the turkey all ready to eat
And all the while they were singing
Their song of praise to God:

"We give thanks to Thee, Heavenly Father
For protection from the chill
For Thy bounteous blessings we praise Thee
For the freedom and friendship Thou hast granted!"

We give thanks to Thee, O Father
For leading Thy children our fathers across the sea
In Thy glorious mercy Thou hast bestowed upon us
A freedom the world observeth and desireth

We give thanks to Thee for Thy bounteous provisions
For family and friends Thou hast granted
For preserving our nation through the storms of history
May Thou and Thou alone be ever praised!
